Solar Sprint

CPP Solar Sprint seeks to engage students in STEM

For the past five years Cleveland Public Power has hosted the Solar Sprint competition as a way to engage local students in fun STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities.

The Sprint is an opportunity for students to learn while building their own miniature solar-powered car. The race promotes partnerships as each team will consist of a minium of two people and a maximum of four.
Each team will purchase a Solar Sprint Kit for $25 (refunded after competition), provided by CPP, containing all of the basic necessities, i.e., solar panel, motor, and other necessities. The car’s design  is left to the ingenuity and imagination of the students.

There are two divisions for the competition – Junior and Senior. Juniors are students in grades 3-5 and seniors represent those in grades 6-8.

So to join the fun:

  1. Recruit team members (teams must have a minimum of two participants and a maximum of four)
  2. Attend one of the Solar Sprint Engineering Workshops held approximately three weeks before the race.
  3. Build your race car
  4. Compete in the annual Solar Sprint race!
